Growing Areas: Tanzania is divided into nine coffee-producing regions, primarily located around the country. The more well-known are Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Ruvuma, Mbeya, Tarimé, and Kigoma. Kilimanjaro, located in the northeast of the country, is the largest coffee-producing region in Tanzania, with coffee grown at altitudes between 1,050 and 2,500 meters.
Cultivated Area: Tanzania’s total coffee planting area is estimated to be approximately 265,000 hectares, a significant scale.
Cultivated Varieties: Arabica accounts for approximately 70% of the planted area, typically planted between 1,000 and 2,500 meters above sea level; Robusta accounts for approximately 30% and is planted between 800 and 900 meters above sea level. Specific varieties include Bourbon, Typica, and Kent, most of which were introduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Grower Composition: Approximately 90% of Tanzania’s coffee is grown by 450,000 smallholder farmers, with the remaining 10% coming from larger estates. Smallholder farmers often form cooperatives, such as the Kilimanjaro Cooperative Union, to ensure coffee quality.
Coffee Bean Production and Exports: Tanzania produces approximately 70,000 tons of coffee beans annually, over 90% of which is exported, making coffee bean exports one of the country’s pillar industries.
